What type testing covers, and what it does not
Type testing applies to the tested joint assembly as a whole: the sleeve, the seal, the insulation and the plugs together. It is not a separate approval for every accessory.
EN 489 is written around a design service life of at least 30 years. That is a property of the standard, not a promise about how long one joint will last in the ground. Real service life depends on installation and conditions.
Standards are reissued. The BG Industry sleeves are type-tested to the newer EN‑489‑1:2019; the Covalence sleeve datasheet cites the EN‑489:2009 edition, and updated documentation has been requested from the manufacturer. Both are on Energiateollisuus ry's list of type-tested joint products (updated 18 June 2026).
Type testing and the Energiateollisuus list
Type-test reports are the manufacturers' confidential documents and we do not share them. Instead our products are notified to Energiateollisuus ry, which keeps a list of verified type-tested joint products: Covalence DualSeal RJS‑E, the BG Industry heat-shrink and electro-weldable sleeves and Rayjoint‑E are on it. Datasheets go out with the quote.
